Report Canvas

Report Canvas

Report results appear in the main window to the right of the report-list. This region is called the "report canvas" or the "results area".

You can open (i.e. run) as many reports as you like, including multiple runs of the same report with different parameter values. Each result is contained in its own "tab".

Navigating and Managing Result Tabs

  • Click on the title of a tab to view the report.
If you hover the mouse over the title of a tab, you get some information about how the report was produced. This can be helpful if you have multiple runs of the same report open.

  • To close a result tab, click on the "x" on the right side of the tab.
  • To "pin" a result tab (so that it remains permanently visible), click on the "pin" icon on the right side of the tab. Click again to unpin.

If you have more result tabs than will fit in the window, you can click on the small downward-pointing triangle on the right of the tabs' title area to navigate through the open reports.

Note: A small check icon will appear on the drop down list denoting the currently-selected tab.

If the result area isn’t large enough to show all the result-tabs you have, two navigation arrows appear at the right of the result tabs, to the left of the downward triangle described above.

These arrows scroll the set of result-tabs left or right, exposing tabs that may be hidden.

Ordering and Arranging Result Tabs

Result tabs can be reordered, moved and anchored ("docked") among regions, grouped into sections, or made free-floating.

  • To change the order, drag a result-tab to a new position in the tab bar.
  • To anchor ("dock") a tab to a different region:
    • Hold and slowly drag the tab off the tab bar, partway into the result area (don’t release it yet). New icons appear denoting the available anchor regions.

    • Drop the tab on the desired anchor region.
    • Alternately, if the report window is floating (not docked at all), right-click on the title bar of the report window and click Dock. The report window will be anchored to the default tab position. From there you can move it to a new region as described above.

  • Double clicking a docked result tab makes the tab float (i.e. detaches the tab and makes it a separate window).
  • Double clicking on a floating tab expands it to full screen.
  • Double clicking a full screen window reverts it to floating at its prior size and position.
  • To re-dock a floating window, right-click the title and choose "Dock".

Using the right-click menu to arrange tabs

Menu Description
Dock

Docks (anchors) the report-tab in the default position.

(Enabled if the tab is floating.)

Float

Detaches the tab and allows the report window to be moved freely.

(Enabled if the tab is docked.)

Close all but this Closes all the tabs except the selected tab.
Close all but pinned Close all the tabs except the pinned tabs.
Change Appearance
Opens a settings window so that you can control various properties of the report canvas area.  Some items apply to the current tab; others apply to the entire set of tabs.
Run report with different parameters...
Run the same report but specify new parameter values (and optionally a different Favorite layout).  This is the same as the ribbon button, Different Params but is enabled only if the report uses parameters.
Layouts
Apply a different “Favorite” layout to the report results.  This is enabled only if Favorites exist for the report.  See Pivot Favorites and/or Table Favorites for more information.
Pin Tab Fixes/pins the selected tab to the tab title bar.
New horizontal tab group

Creates a new window (group) of result tabs at the bottom of the result area and moves the selected tab into the new group.

(Enabled if two or more tabs are open.)

New vertical tab group

Creates a new window (group) of result tabs at the right of the result area and moves the selected tab into the new group.

(Enabled if two or more tabs are open.)

You can’t mix "new horizontal" and "new vertical" on the same canvas.  If you add a new horizontal group, you can only add additional horizontal ones.  Similarly for vertical. If you want the other orientation, you will have to close tab-groups until you only have one left.
